safety; was found to cause thyroid tumors and in 1983 the FDA tried to have it banned but it was overruled by members of teh Reagen Admin.
Red 40
found in; soda, candy, pastries, gelatins, pet food, sausage (that's just disgusting)
safety; most tested food dye although the most important rodent tests were inconclusive and improperly conducted, but the FDA's reaction to that was they acknowledged the flaws but belived the results shown saw it as harmless

Yellow 5
used in; pet foods, soda, gelatins, baked goods
safety; is known to cause 'mild allergic reactions' in some asprin sensitive people
Yellow 6
used in; drinks, sausage, baked goods, candy, gelatin
safety; tests resulted that Yellow 6 causes tumors in the adrenal glands and kidneys. it is made up of small amounts of other carciogenic substances but apparently doesn't pose enough of a threat to humanity to make it illegal. ;P also causes some allergic reactions
